APPLICATION FOR AN AFSCAN undergraduate veterinary STUDENTSHIP
This grant will allow African undergraduate veterinary students to participate in a research project during their final two years of study, either at their own veterinary school or in a laboratory at another institution. The selected project must address issues related to the disease or welfare of companion animals relevant to African society.
Successful applicants will receive a studentship of US$1,000, allocated as follows: US$500 to cover their living expenses during the award period and US$500 to cover bench fees or consumables for the research project.
This award is open to all veterinary undergraduates in the final two years of study at institutions in AFSCAN-participating countries [Angola, Burundi, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia]. Applications must be submitted by the veterinary school, college, or faculty, not by the student themselves. Each veterinary educational institution may nominate ONE application for their top student.
Each application must be accompanied by a letter of endorsement from the University (Dean of the School) and a letter of support from the respective AFSCAN Ambassador (see below).
All applications must be submitted to the respective country Ambassador by June 30th for an initial review. During this phase, the Ambassador will verify if the forms are properly completed, with the necessary signatures and all required documents attached. After this initialevaluation by the Ambassadors, the projects should be submitted by e-mail (marcondes.mary@gmail.com), with the message’s subject line ‘AFSCAN Studentship Award Nomination’, along with a letter from the Ambassador confirming that the application has been reviewed. Submissions must be sent before September 30th.
All applications will undergo a formal peer-review process, with proposed projects evaluated for scientific validity. The AFSCAN Project Board will make the final decision.
The successful applicants will be notified by November 15th, 2026.
